Creating a fairer distribution and societies is something we have tried to do in the past. Marx inspired countries tried. Didn’t work the best. Wealth and power ended up centralized in the hands of a few. Capitalist inspired countries tried. Didn’t work the best. Wealth and power ended up centralized in the hands of a few.
The problem is that even though a revival of the tax, for example tax on land and inheritance, are needed these tools that have worked for a while are either not being used or have been rendered insufficient in a political economic context where e.g. through diminishing labour unions, the power of the those without is declining and through the systemic trap called “Success to the successful" the power of those with is increasing. In short the now old tools haven’t budge the negative trends of rising inequality or environmental destruction. To quote Gar Alperovitz and Tolstoy “What then must we do?”
As has been described our ability to create change is many times neglected or because, as Galperovitz points out, we have vested interest in pessimism as it allows us to do nothing.
Doing nothing is boring and a lot of people have already started doing the fun stuff. People are changing and democratizing the ownership of wealth and thus the power base of the system in freeing up land from their enclosure of aristocracy through land trust and setting companies free through credit-unions, cooperatives and worker owned companies.
