Supreme Court Justice of USA Louis Brandeis summed it up in 1941,
“We can have a democratic society, or we can have the concentration of great wealth in the hands of the few. We cannot have both.”
Having resources gives you power to shape your current and future reality as seen in all the money spent on lobbying LOBBYING DATA SUMMARY – OPENSECRETS
Not having resources makes it a lot harder. If democracy should have any meaning, money shouldn’t buy you power, if all humans are borne equal should have meaning, the resources that creates power and inequality have to be shared better. We as society can decide how we distribute this wealth and the power it creates. Property rights are our design and they are protected by us the humans and they were not awarded to certain people by a God or nature. Unless awarded a right by a institution created by human a property right is a privilege some has taken using their resources, or theft if paraphrasing Proudhon (PROPERTY IS THEFT! - WIKIPEDIA) or thinking about how the enclosure practice in Britain (ENCLOSURE - WIKIPEDIA).
A discontinuation of this historic unequal practice will mean a questioning of current property rights and a different distribution of the wealth through them and other policies. It is a discontinuation that is needed if we are to prosper within limits. Inequality diminishes our well-being and fuels our consumption of our destruction. So let us heed to Rousseaus words when someone says
"'this is mine“' and cry to our fellows 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody”References and quotes
